Mike Spencer has spent more than 20 years interviewing and investigating people and subjects, first as a newspaper reporter and the last 16 years as a private investigator in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The bedrock of his practice has been domestic investigations, criminal defense, and family law matters. His case files for personal injury attorneys include: dog bites, drownings, vehicle collisions, slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, wrongful death and premises liability cases. In criminal defense, he has worked on everything from homicide to simple assault and DUI defense. In family law he has conducted numerous surveillance and background checks. He is a savvy interviewer of people and is adept at building rapport with witnesses. He knows that in the private sector that he cannot force people to provide information. He has worked for some of the top attorneys in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Mr. Spencer has honed his interviewing and other investigative skills since opening Spencer Investigations in 1997. To amass the 6,000 hours of work experience required to sit for the state PI license exam, he worked under legendary Hollywood private eye John Nazarian and investigated insurance defense and workers’ compensation cases.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Franklin and Marshall College and a master’s degree from UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, where his thesis earned faculty honors. In Florida and California he covered police, crime, and did investigative reporting for daily newspapers. Journalism taught him early how to quickly locate and summarize vast amounts of information.
Mr. Spencer’s dedication has earned him honors from readers of The Recorder legal newspaper, who have several times voted him best Private Investigator/Skip Tracer. His professional articles have appeared in magazines from the Alameda County Bar Association and Alameda Contra Costa Trial Lawyers Association. He is a leader in the investigations community.
